Report

The state of local business web presence (2026)

Everyone says “just email the business.” But how many local businesses can you actually reach that way? We analyzed 7,332 US local businesses pulled from Google Maps across 15 industries and 25 cities. The short version: 91% list a website, but only 60% publish an email you can actually find — while 88% list a phone. Which is why the phone still isn't dead.

How we measured it

7,332 businesses sampled from Google Maps across 15 categories × 25 US cities (a central zip per city), 2026-07-18. “Has a website” = a site listed on the Google Maps profile. “Has an email” = a contact email discoverable on that site in a standard automated scrape. Percentages are over the sampled businesses. Aggregates only — no personal data is published.

Reachability varies wildly by industry

Email findability isn't uniform. In our sample, real estate agents were the most reachable by email (79% publish one), while auto repair shops were the least (39%) — the niches that list a phone but rarely a website. If you're prospecting the low-email industries, phone and SMS still win; for the high-email ones, cold email is fair game.

What it means for outreach

  • Email alone leaves most of the market on the table. With 60% publishing a findable email, an email-only list misses the ~40% you can still call.
  • Match the channel to the industry. High-email niches (real estate agents and similar) suit cold email; phone-first niches (auto repair shops) need a number, not an inbox.
  • A good list carries both. The businesses without a website almost always still have a phone on their Google Maps listing — so the most complete lead lists pull phone, website and email together.
