Searching Australia properly

Google Maps returns a limited number of places per search, so one search across Sydney or Melbourne misses most of it. The location picker covers about 3,300 Australian postcodes and the suburbs within them — it splits Sydney into 152 postcodes — so a metro can be covered in small areas, each searched separately.

Each business comes back with its phone, website, full address, rating, reviews and hours from Google Maps, then the email and social profiles found on its own website — one row per business, exported to XLSX or CSV.

Emailing Australian businesses: the Spam Act in outline

  • • Australia's Spam Act 2003 requires consent for commercial emails, with inferred consent available when an address is conspicuously published, the message relates to the recipient's business role, and there's no statement saying they don't want unsolicited messages.
  • • Every message must identify the sender and include a functional unsubscribe, honoured within five working days. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) enforces it.

This is an outline, not legal advice. The reference is the ACMA; for the European picture, see Google Maps scraping and GDPR.

Questions

Can I cold email Australian businesses?

Often, under inferred consent for conspicuously published addresses where the message is relevant to the recipient's role and there's no 'no unsolicited messages' statement. This is an outline, not legal advice.

Why do fewer Australian listings have a phone number?

It's what the data shows: a noticeably smaller share of the Australian businesses we sample list a phone on Google Maps than in the other countries we cover. Plan on email and website contact forms for the rest.

How much does a lead list for Australia cost?
