Searching Germany properly

Google Maps returns a limited number of places per search, so a single search across Berlin or Munich misses most of it. The location picker covers about 8,300 German postcodes: tick a city and it's split into its postcode areas — 182 for Berlin, 74 for Munich — each searched separately.

Each business comes back with its phone, website, full address, rating, reviews and hours from Google Maps, then the email and social profiles found on its own website — one row per business, exported to XLSX or CSV.

Contacting German businesses: the rules in outline

  • • Germany's Act against Unfair Competition (UWG) treats advertising by email as an unreasonable nuisance unless the recipient gave prior express consent — and that applies to businesses as well as consumers. The narrow exception is existing customers, under specific conditions.
  • • Phone calls to businesses are treated more leniently: presumed consent can be enough where the call is clearly relevant to what the business does. Consumers need express consent for calls too.
  • • Letters are the least restricted channel. In practice, German lists get used for calling, post, and consent-first campaigns — the easy-to-find emails are a legal requirement on the business, not a permission for you.

This is an outline, not legal advice. The reference is § 7 UWG (the relevant section of the act); for the European picture, see Google Maps scraping and GDPR.

Questions

Why are emails so easy to find for German businesses?

German law requires commercial websites to publish an Impressum — legal contact details, including an email address. So nearly every business with a website publishes one, which is why coverage in our German samples is the highest of any country.

Can I cold email German businesses?

Generally not without prior consent: the UWG requires it for email advertising, including to businesses. Calls to businesses can rely on presumed consent where clearly relevant, and letters are less restricted. This is an outline, not legal advice — check with a German lawyer before running outreach.

How much does a lead list for Germany cost?

1 credit per business delivered, with emails and socials included. As a guide, we estimate ~1,400 dentists in Berlin — about 1,400 credits for all of them. The first 100 credits are free; the Starter plan is 50,000 credits a month for $19.
