Which local businesses publish an email?

By Doug Nielsen, Product Manager · Published · Data: Google Maps, July–September 2026

We looked for a published contact email for 65,024 local businesses in Google Maps' top results (20 industries in 324 cities across the US, the UK, Germany, Canada and Australia), reading the website of each one that has its own. We found one for 63%. The rate moves with where a business is and with what it does: from 56% in the US to 81% in Germany, and from 39% of nail salons to 74% of real estate agents and veterinarians.

Key findings (top Google Maps results in 324 cities, July–September 2026)

  • We found a contact email on the website of 63% of the 65,024 top-ranked Google Maps listings we checked (58% of all 70,643 sampled).
  • We found one most often for German businesses (81%) and least often for US businesses (56%).
  • Of 20 industries, we found one most often for real estate agents and veterinarians (74%) and least often for nail salons (39%).
  • 25% of the addresses US businesses publish are free webmail such as Gmail or Yahoo, against 9% in Germany.
  • 7% of listings link no website at all and 2% only a social-media or booking page; among nail salons, 17% and 13%.
  • The median restaurant has 1,132 Google reviews; the median accountant has 27.
  • 63% of rated businesses show 4.8 stars or more, and 25% a perfect 5.0.
How we counted

Email rates are out of the 65,024 businesses in samples where we ran the website email check, listings with no website of their own included; website figures are out of all 70,643 businesses sampled, and review and rating figures out of those whose listing shows them. How we counted: methodology.

How we counted

Checked: businesses in samples where we ran the website email check, listings with no website of their own included; the base for “Email found”. Free webmail is a share of the emails found; no website, a share of all businesses sampled.

Germany's lead fits its Impressum rule: commercial websites there must carry a legal notice whose required contact details include an email address (§ 5 DDG). German businesses also use free webmail least: it is 9% of the addresses they publish, against 25% in the US.

Published isn't the same as free to use for marketing: Germany is also the strictest of these five markets for cold email. This isn't legal advice; our legal guide goes into more detail.

At the bottom of the table, 30% of the nail salons we sampled have no website of their own, so there's nowhere to publish an address. Free webmail is most common among nail salons (71%), hair salons (38%) and auto repair shops (36%) and rarest among law firms (5%) and accountants (5%).

Methodology

The sample
6,399 samples, each one industry searched on Google Maps in one city: 20 industries in 324 cities, harvested between July 17, 2026 and September 24, 2026. A sample holds the first results Google Maps returned for the search — 5 to 30 businesses once duplicates are removed, most often 10. 193 samples combine searches in several ZIP or postcode areas of the city rather than one. In all, 70,643 businesses. Samples with fewer than 5 usable rows are left out, and so are those where under 40% of the listings carry the industry's Google category or a close synonym (German "med spa" searches that return day spas and massage, for example). The same samples sit behind our lead lists, which also estimate each city's market: how our lead samples and estimates work.
What “email found” means
An address published on the business's own website. We read the homepage — in a real browser when the page needs JavaScript — and, if it has none, the site's contact, about or Impressum pages. An address on the business's own domain is preferred over free webmail. Template placeholders, font-licence credits and the inboxes of web agencies and booking platforms are removed. Nothing is guessed from name patterns, and deliverability isn't tested.
The email base
Email rates are out of the 65,024 businesses in samples where the website email check ran: 5,836 of the 6,399 samples. The other 563 have no email at all: some were harvested without the check, and a check that ran and found nothing looks the same in the data, so none of them count. That can overstate the rate slightly. Out of all 70,643 businesses sampled, it is 58%: the floor.
Websites and webmail
“No website” means the listing links none. “Social or booking page only” means the link goes to Facebook, Instagram, Linktree, TikTok, LinkedIn, Yelp or a booking or ordering platform (Vagaro, Fresha, Booksy, OpenTable, Toast and similar) rather than a site of the business's own. Free webmail covers Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook and Hotmail, iCloud, AOL, GMX, web.de, T-Online and internet providers' mailboxes such as Comcast, BT and Bigpond.
Reviews and ratings
As shown on the Google Maps listing when harvested. Review counts the harvest misread — a phone number, or the star rating glued onto the count — are dropped, so a few genuinely huge counts are missing too. A business listed twice in a sample (same name, phone and street) counts once.
Privacy
The samples store email addresses masked to their first character (j***@example.com). This page and its CSV publish totals and shares only: no business names, addresses or rows.
Caveats
  • • Top results, not every business. Google ranks prominent, well-reviewed listings first, and those are probably likelier to have a website and an email than the long tail. Read the rates as describing the businesses a search surfaces first.
  • • Cities, not the countryside. The smallest of the 324 cities has about 60,000 residents; towns and rural areas aren't sampled.
  • • Weighted by the sample. US businesses are 59% of it, so the overall figures lean towards the US; compare countries on their own rows.
  • • A lower bound on what's published. An address only in an image, a PDF or behind a contact form doesn't count as found.
  • • A snapshot. Listings and websites change; the figures describe the harvest dates above.
